Walter Parazaider, Chicago Founding Member, Dies at 81 after Alzheimer’s Battle

Walter Parazaider, a founding member of the rock band Chicago, died early on June 17, 2026. He was 81 years old and died in hospice care from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Parazaider was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years earlier and spent his final years battling the illness. His wife, JacLynn, was with him during his last moments.

Walter Parazaider helped shape the sound of Chicago, which formed in 1967. The band was first called The Big Thing, then Chicago Transit Authority, before shortening the name to Chicago in 1969. Parazaider played with Lee Loughnane and James Pankow in the brass and woodwind section, a hallmark of the band’s sound. His work helped blend rock with brass instruments.

During his time with Chicago, Parazaider played on several of the band’s well-known songs. These included “25 or 6 to 4,” “Saturday in the Park,” and “If You Leave Me Now.” His woodwind performances were a key part of Chicago’s music. He retired in 2016 after nearly 50 years with the band.

Walter and JacLynn were married for 59 years. JacLynn spoke about their years together and Walter’s fight with Alzheimer’s. She said he struggled with the disease for several years before it led to his death. The couple had two daughters, Laura and Felicia, who survive him along with JacLynn.

A memorial service for Parazaider’s life and career will be held, though the date has not been set. Fans and people in the music world remember him for his part in one of America’s long-lasting rock bands and his influence on music.

Walter Parazaider’s death ends a chapter in rock history marked by his talent and creativity. His music with Chicago is still heard and enjoyed worldwide, reflecting decades of work. As the band carries on, Parazaider’s role in its start is clear.
